Less than three months since Volkswagen Motorsport’s announcement of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb appearance in June 2018, the company from Wolfsburg unveiled their fully-electric prototype which Romain Dumas will use in an attempt to break a record for electric cars. The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak has been shown to the public in Ales, France, where the team will continue to test a car at the racetrack.

Volkswagen electric prototype has 500 kW (680 PS) from two electric engines on less than 1,100 kg of weight. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 2.25 seconds, what is faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars. Its goal is to beat the existing record of 8:57.118 minutes for electric cars at the ‘Race to the Clouds’.

“It was absolutely fantastic to see the completed I.D. R for the first time, and to take it out for its first spin. What Volkswagen has managed to put together from scratch over the past few months has my greatest respect.

I had obviously seen initial pictures of the car – but it is even more spectacular in the flesh. We now have a packed schedule of testing ahead of us, and I am looking forward to every metre,” said Romain Dumas, who is a three-time winner of the hill climb on Pikes Peak.
