Porsche Carrera Cup Germany Nurburgring – race 2
Sunny weather today at Nurburgring was in contrast with yesterday’s grey skies and was the perfect weather for the second race of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany weekend. Phillip Eng won yesterday and that was his eight win of the season, but Sven Muller and other drivers showed big potential and skill. So today’s race was going to be interesting. The Porsche Carrera Cup Germany is the best, the fastest and the most competitive of all national Carrera Cups so every race is very good.
The start was clean with no incidents and Sven Muller had a great start in front of Phillip Eng and found himself in first place. Eng was second and Ammermuller was third waiting for his chance to attack Muller. However, Spike Goddart crashed in the first lap so safety car went on the track while debris were cleaned by race officials. His crash was very strange, he just left the track at full speed, went on the grass and slid all the way to oncoming traffic. A possible cause of the accident could be numerous car issues but the incident will certainly be inspected. The safety car went off the track in lap 6 and race continued with Muller first, Eng second and Ammermuller third. Eng chased Muller but the real danger was Michael Ammermuller who was very close behind. Behind the top 3 drivers, there was an interesting battle between Nicki Thiim and Alex Riberas for fifth place. Thiim was very close to Riberas and managed to pass him after applying the pressure for a few turns and bumped the back of Riberas’s Porsche, which was the same controversial move that Thiim pulled out yesterday.
By lap 11, Ben Baker had to retire after having a flat tire. This weekend wasn’t so good for the talented driver from England: first he had gearbox problems and started from the last place and then he had to retire in the second race. He did, however, show his potential when he started from 22nd place yesterday and managed to advance 10 places to 12th position.
The overall drivers’ standings were unchanged. Muller was first, Eng second and Ammermuller third with all drivers driving perfectly and waiting for somebody’s mistake. Nicki Thiim has moved close to Engelhart on fourth position and stared pressuring him with his white 991 GT3 Cup just inches behind Engelhart’s rear bumper. Since both drivers are very experienced racers the battle was very interesting and Thiim surprised Engelhart in Coca Cola turn when he used an odd racing line and managed to pass him for fourth spot. But, his luck ran out just a few minutes later when he entered the curve too wide and put 2 wheels on grass, lost his pace and was passed by Engelhart, finding himself back on fifth spot.
In the front things were unchanged since Muller drove perfectly and didn’t make any mistake. He finished first with Eng on second and Ammermuller on third. All in all, it was a good race, maybe not interesting in top spots but very intense in fighting for other places. For full results, click HERE:
