John Surtees (1934 - 2017)
At the age of 83, the 1964 Formula 1 and multiple motorcycle World Champion John Surtees has passed away on 10th of March in London, the Surtees family announced.
John Surtees CBE earned himself a place in the history of motorsport as the only man to win the world championship on both two wheels and four. Surtees took the F1 drivers’ title with Ferrari in 1964 and won a total of six Grands Prix in an F1 career. Before the that, he won Motorcycle World Chamionship in the 500 cc class on four occasions – in 1965, 1958, 1959, and 1960.
“We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life. He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end,” said the Surtees family in the statement.
