There are many reasons why owning a car is important, and owning one can be rewarding. A car can give you peace of mind, help improve your quality of life and offer the freedom to travel in your time frame. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There is a tricky part of registration and all that jazz.

Florida car registration can appear complicated, but fear not, cause here’s the whole step-by-step process on how to renew your vehicle registration in Florida.

The sunshine state has a lot to offer, from hundreds of miles of beaches to the (in)famous Miami nightlife. So you definitely need a car to visit all those places. This brings us to vehicle maintenance and that time of the year when the registration is about to be renewed. Once your vehicle registration is about to expire (or it already has), here is the complete guide on how to successfully renew your vehicle registration according to Florida State Laws. The state of Florida requires every vehicle to be registered with Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Office (DHSMV). And they have really simplified the whole process.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes to the Florida vehicle registration renewal process:

  • To avoid the hassle, the state of Florida has a designated online platform for Florida residents to make registration renewals easy and convenient.
  • There is a dedicated mobile app that offers a secure renewal or registration on an eligible vehicle or vessel.
  • You can do it the “old-fashioned way” by simply visiting any motor vehicle service center statewide to renew their credential.

Renew Through Online Platform

To renew a vehicle or vessel registration online, MyDMV Portal offers one or two-year registration renewals for motor vehicles, and vessels and even offers to obtain a duplicate registration if the customer’s registration is lost. The customer must provide personal identifying information of the owner of the vehicle and/or vessel to log in and complete the transaction. Also worth mentioning is that the payment option is via credit card. Customers using MyDMV Portal will receive their registration in the mail within 7-10 business days from the transaction. A $2.00 processing fee is assessed for the total transaction.

Renew Through Mobile Application

When it comes to vehicle registration renewal in Florida, the sunshine state offers a dedicated mobile application MyFlorida that makes the process smooth and easy. The best part is the customers can renew up to five vehicles and/or vessels at once via FLHSMV’s mobile application, for a period of one or two years with only one processing fee.

In order to renew vehicle registration, customers must provide the license plate or vehicle identification number (VIN) or hull identification number (HIN) for the vehicle and/or vessel they want to register to complete the transaction. If FLHSMV is unable to verify valid insurance on the vehicle or vessel, no registration will be issued.

Whether you are an iPhone or Android user, the MyFlorida application is available on all mobile devices and allows customers to securely renew a registration on an eligible vehicle or vessel. Customers will receive a digital document to use until the registration arrives in the mail. A $4.00 processing fee is applied to each transaction for customers paying with a credit card, or $3.75 for transactions paid through a checking account.

Renew Registration in an Office

As we have mentioned before, this is the good old-fashioned way. Customers can visit any motor vehicle service center across the state of Florida to renew their vehicle registration. The benefit of this option is that the registration will be provided on the same day. Pretty neat, right?

You will need to bring your registration renewal notice or registration certificate if you didn’t get your reminder. Also, you will need to provide your driver’s license or FL ID card, as well as proof of valid auto insurance.
