Felix Baumgartner's 2015 12H of Bathurst crash
World famous stratosphere jumper, adrenaline junkie and an all-around cool guy Felix Baumgartner also loves motorsport. After his successfull record breaking jump, Baumgartner underwent serious preparations in order to compete in 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2014, and he finished the race in 9th position driving an Audi R8 LMS Ultra for Audi Race Experience alongside Marco Werner, Frank Biela and Pierre Kaffer.
Felix Baumgartner’s appearance at 2015 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour came unnoticed compared to his 2014 endurance racing debut, however, his car took part in a crash that occurred at lap 210, 2:30 hours until the end of the race. Approaching the Skyline, Baumgartner’s car collided with #91 MARC Cars’ Mazda 3GTC driven by Ivo Breukers. The I class car slid off track and was totaled, resulting in a safety car period. However, Felix Baumgartner managed to keep the car straight and continued the race. Phoenix Racing’s #16 Audi R8 LMS Ultra won 9th place with 268 laps driven, and Baumgartner shared the driver’s seat with Christopher Haase and Stéphane Ortelli.

Even though the crash looked pretty serious, nobody was hurt in this incident and Breukers walked out of his vehicle. However, the incident could have been avoided if Baumgartner had decided to delay the overtake of a slower car until there was a better chance of doing it. Despite the controversial overtake attempt, Felix Baumgartner has proved that he’s as much a driver as he is a record breaker, and we’d love to see him racing more in the future!
