The driver who survived two horrible crashes in one season to become a champion
As a four-time champion, Dario Franchitti is one of the legends of the IndyCar Championship. Did you know how the Scot won his first title in the series?
In 2007, Franchitti was already an experienced driver and one of the favorites for the title that year. Despite having two huge crashes earlier in the season, he won the championship.
Flying high in the car
The first accident was in Michigan where he tangled with Dan Wheldon resulting in his car flipping before being hit again by Scott Dixon. The second accident was in Kentucky. As Franchitti crossed the finish line at the end of the race, he did not realize that the chequered flag had been waved and continued to race. He crashed into the back of Kosuke Matsuura, flipping yet again, and hitting the outside wall.
