Whincup conquers streets of Townsville

Jamie Whincup extended his lead in the V8 Supercars Championship after he has won the first Castrol Edge Townsville 400 race.

This was only the second triumph for the Holden driver in 2016. Whincup was the winner of the season’s opening race in Adelaide and finally broke a streak of 12 races without a win. After this victory, he is only a step from scoring 100 wins in the series.

Whincup started from pole position at Townsville and was at the top through the most of the race. Shane van Gisbergen finished second while the reigning champion Mark Winterbottom grabbed last spot at the podium.

After 14 races of the 2016 campaign, Whincup tops overall classification with 1425 points, van Gisbergen is second with 1342, only one ahead of Winterbottom who moved up to third.
