GP3 Series: Charles Leclerc leads the rookie attack to the Catalunya podium
Charles Leclerc (ART Grand Prix) started his debut season in the GP3 Series in a victorious way. The Monegasque driver takes a dominant win in the season-opening race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Two more GP3 rookies joined Leclerc at the podium – Jake Hughes (DAMS) and Nirei Fukuzumi (ART Grand Prix).
The pole-sitter Jake Hughes didn’t defend his starting advantage and he felt to the second place before the first turn, behind Leclerc. Fukuzumi also had a good start and jumped to P3, ahead of Antonio Fuoco (Trident). The biggest loser at the start was Kevin Jörg, who dropped three places from second to fifth. All top 5 position remained unchanged from opening lap until the chequered flag.
Alexander Albon gained two positions in the first two laps, progressing from P8 to P6. Jake Dennis was chasing Albon for twenty laps but stayed behind. Oscar Tunjo, Nyck De Vries and Ralph Boschung completed the top 10. Twenty-four drivers started the race, all except one came home securely. Steijn Schothorst retired early due to technical issues.
The second GP3 Series race at the Spanish circuit is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
