GP2: Stoffel Vandoorne tops the Spa-Francochamps practice

  • Stoffel Vandoorne at Spa-Francochamps

After a summer break, GP2 drivers returned to racing at Spa-Francochamps and the free practice session was topped by Stoffel Vandoorne with a time of 1:57.486. The session started at noon under a sunny sky with Sergey Sirotkin in the early lead. As the pace went up, Alexander Rossi became the fastest with 1:58.091. Vandoorne was the next time topper with 1:57.499 and Mitch Evans squeezed between him and Rossi on third. Belgian driver and GP2 season leader soon improved to 1:57.486.
Julian Léal stalled in the final corners with around 25 minutes to go and was pushed by marshals to the pits, causing a brief yellow, and with 17 minutes to go, it was Raffaele Marciello who lost power and stalled his car in the pitlane exit. Nothing significant happened until the very end of the session, when Arthur Pic crashed his car into the wall at Turn 9. In the end, Vandoorne managed to hold onto his top spot with the time he previously set. Mitch Evans was behind, followed by Rossi, Alex Lynn and Oliver Rowland who had a great drive until stopping at the very end of the track in his final lap. Pierre Gasly, Sirotkin and Pic were behind him, with Jordan King and Raffaele Marciello earning the last two spots in top ten. You can see the detailed results here:
