Rallycross at Spa: First ever World RX victory for Timur Timerzyanov
Timur Timerzyanov (GRX Taneco Team, Hyundai i20) is the winner of the Belgian round of the 2019 FIA World Rallycross Championship that took place at the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
For the 32-year-old driver from Russia, who was European rallycross champion in 2012 and 2013, and who is World RX regular since the inaugural event in 2014, it’s the maiden World RX victory in his 64th start. Previously, Timerzyanov was on a podium just two times.
In the Final at the 913m long purpose-built track at Spa, Timerzyanov defeated Andreas Bakkerud (Monster Energy RX Cartel, Audi S1) and his teammate Joni Wiman in another Hyundai i20.
For Wiman, it’s his just second start in the World Rallycross Championship. The other three finalists were Timmy Hansen (Team Hansen MJP, Peugeot 208), Janis Baumanis (Team STARD, Ford Fiesta) and Liam Doran (RX Cartel, Audi S1).
Twenty Supercar drivers participated in the third round of the championship. There was also former champion Mattias Ekstrom among them, who finished tenth in the Intermediate classification after four qualifying heats and then sixth in his Semi-final group. RX2 drivers also raced at Spa this weekend. Oliver Eriksson (Olsbergs MSE) took his second win this season.
The next World RX event will take place again on another iconic Grand Prix circuit – Silverstone. The event is scheduled for May 25-26.
