Supercars at Winton: One more perfect weekend for Scott McLaughlin
Even when they tangled on the race track, DJR Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard are dominating in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, leaving not much to the others.
The championship leader Scott McLaughlin had one more perfect weekend in the #17 Ford Mustang by scoring victories in both races of the Winton SuperSprint at the Winton Motor Raceway, increasing the number of wins in 2019 to ten in fourteen races.
His main rival was his teammate Fabian Coulthard in the #12 Ford Mustang. They fought for a victory but a contact in Saturday’s race caused that Coulthard dropped to 15th place. On Sunday, there were no incidents between teammates and Coulthard finished on the second spot of the podium.
The other podium scorers were Chaz Mostert (2nd, Tickford Racing, Ford Mustang) and David Reynolds (3rd, Erebus/Penrite Racing, Holden Commodore) in the first race and Jamie Whincup (3rd, Red Bull Holden Commodore) in the second race.
After fourteen races and ten victories, Scott McLaughlin leads the championship with 1646 points on his account. Fabian Coulthard, who won two times, is second in the classification with 1402 points. Red Bull Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen is third with 1231 points, eleven more than fourth-placed David Reynolds. Jamie Whincup is rounding the top 5 with 1168 points.
The next Supercars event is the Darwin Triple Crown at the Hidden Valley Raceway on June 15-16.
