Nick Cassidy is a new Super Formula champion
Nick Cassidy is a new Super Formula champion! The 25-year-old New Zealander has won the championship title after finishing second in the season’s finale at Suzuka Circuit.
The driver of the #37 Tom’s Toyota defeated last year’s champion Naoki Yamamoto (Dandelion Racing, Honda) by three points. It’s the third championship title for Cassidy in Japan, following his triumphs in Formula 3 in 2015 and Super GT Series in 2017.
The winner of the race at Suzuka was Tomoki Nojiri (Team Mugen, Honda), who became the seventh different winner in seven races in 2019. Nojiri and Cassidy were joined on the podium by Nirei Fukuzumi (Dandelion Racing, Honda).
Yuhi Sekiguchi (Team Impul, Toyota) finished fourth at Suzuka, ahead of Naoki Yamamoto. The other point scorers were Hiroaki Ishiura (P.mu/cerumo Inging, Toyota), Koudai Tsukakoshi (Real Racing, Honda) and Ryo Hirakawa (Team Impul, Toyota).
Docomo Team Dandelion Racing won the Teams’ championship, collecting 50 points, two more than Team Tom’s.
The next weekend Super GT Series will have season’s finale at Twin Ring Motegi, with Nick Cassidy having a chance to become a double champion.
