NASCAR Cup Series: Martin Truex Jr. repeated a victory at Sonoma
Martin Truex Jr. (Joe Gibbs Racing) has won Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, the 16th race of the regular season of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and one of only three Cup Series races at road courses.
This is his fourth NASCAR Cup Series victory this season and 23rd in a career. Truex Jr. also managed to defend his last year’s victory on the 2.52-mile road course. Previously, he won at Sonoma back in 2013.
Driving the #19 Toyota Camry and leading for 59 of the 90 laps, Truex Jr. defeated his teammate Kyle Busch in the #18 Toyota by 1.861 seconds at the finish line.
Ryan Blaney finished third in the #12 Ford Mustang of Team Penske, ahead of Matt DiBenedetto who scored a career-best fourth place in the #95 Toyota of Leavine Family Racing. Another JGR driver Denny Hamlin completed the top 5 after he progressed from P26 to P5 in the final stage of the race.
Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing Ford) and Ryan Newman (Roush Fenway Racing Ford) claimed the sixth and seventh spots. Erik Jones, who started from the rear of the field, was eighth in the fourth JGR Toyota. Aric Almirola brings SHR #10 Ford to the ninth place, ahead of polesitter Kyle Larson and the best Chevrolet driver in the #42 Chip Ganassi Racing Camaro.
