IndyCar Series: Dominant victory for Josef Newgarden at Iowa Speedway
Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) has won the Iowa 300 at Iowa Speedway, the 12th round of the 2019 IndyCar Series season.
It’s a fourth win of the season for and 14th win in a career for Newgarden that retained him in the championship lead, 29 points (487-458) clear of Alexander Rossi (Andretti Autosport), who finished sixth at Iowa.
Newgarden shared a podium with Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) and James Hinchcliffe (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports).
For the fourth time in five years, Newgarden led the most laps in the race at the IndyCar Series’ smallest track but it’s his only second victory there. Previously, he won at Iowa in 2016 after leading for 282 laps (of 300). This time, he went to victory lane by leading 245 laps in Team Penske’s #2 Hitachi Chevrolet.
The start of the race was delayed four and a half hours due to severe weather, including lightning and heavy rain. After 55 laps, the race was interrupted by a red flag because of a brief shower.
The next race is the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, scheduled for July 28.
