Juan Pablo Montoya scored his maiden IMSA victory at Mid-Ohio
Acura Team Penske’s Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron are the winners of the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio, the fourth round of the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. For the duo in the #6 Acura ARX-05 DPi it’s the first win together and the maiden IMSA victory for JP Montoya since he switched from IndyCar Series to IMSA Championship in 2017.
After six podiums, Montoya finally climbed to the top podium spot in his 15th IMSA race. For his partner Dane Cameron, who was IMSA champion in 2016, it’s his sixth overall IMSA victory in a career.
Together with JP Montoya’s career-best IMSA result, Mazda Team Joest also celebrated its best result in the North American sports car competition, having two crews on a podium. Tristan Nunez and Oliver Jarvis finished second in the #77 Mazda RT24-P, ahead of teammates Jonathan Bomarito and Ryan Hunter-Reay in the #55 Mazda.
Eleventh overall and first in the LMP2 class were Matt McMurry and Eric Lux in the #52 Oreca of PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports.
Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor took the victory in the GTLM class at the wheel of the #912 Porsche 911 RSR. Porsche GT Team had a double celebration because Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet finished third in the #911 Porsche. Between two Porsches, Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen finished the race in the second place in the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R.
The fiercest battle was in the GTD class. After two hours and forty minutes of racing, AIM Vasser Sullivan’s Jack Hawksworth defeated Meyer Shank Racing’s Mario Farnbacher by just 0.598 seconds on the finish line. Hawksworth was sharing the #14 Lexus RC F GT3 with Richard Heistand. Farnbacher’s partner in the #86 Acura NSX GT3 was Trent Hindman. The third place in the GTD class went to Bryan Sellers and Ryan Hardwick in the #48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3.
