Oscar Piastri is Formula Renault Eurocup champion for 2019
The 18-year-old Australian Oscar Piastri (R-ace GP) is Formula Renault Eurocup champion for 2019!
With one victory and a fourth-place finish in season’s finale at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, he defended his championship lead and won the title with the 7.5-point advantage over Victor Martins (MP Motorsport), who was second in the first race and won Race 2 at Yas Marina.
After the first race, Piastri and Martins were sharing the podium with Lorenzo Colombo (MP Motorsport). In the second race, teammates Martins and Colombo gave 1-2 victory to MP Motorsport while R-ace GP’s rookie Cailo Collet finished in the third place. That enabled him to take the Rookie of the Year honours but also gives Teams’ championship title to R-ace GP.
“I think it will take some time to completely sink in. I didn’t have a good race, but today wasn’t what was important. It was extremely competitive all season long and the 7.5-point gap means little in the end. R-ace GP and MP Motorsport were the two teams to beat this season, which made life easier for me to move up the order when we were struggling.
Victor and I had rather similar campaigns. I was a bit faster in the middle of the year while Victor finished strong. I think that we were the two that got the most out of the new Formula Renault. However, we were able to capitalize when we were on form and limit the damage when there were difficulties or when we made mistakes. My target is to move on to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, but nothing is done as yet as I need to look at my different options,” said Oscar Piastri, the first Australian to win Formula Renault Eurocup.
