Formula 2 at Circuit Paul Ricard: Nyck de Vries takes the championship lead
Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) and Anthoine Hubert (BWT Arden) are the winners of two FIA Formula 2 Championship races at the Circuit Paul Ricard, in the fifth round of the 2019 season, repeating the results from the previous round at Monaco, where they also shared victories.
After ten races and three wins, Nyck de Vries is the new championship leader with a 12-point gap (121:109) ahead of the previous leader Nicholas Latifi (DAMS), who finished fifth and sixth in two races at Le Castellet.
After the first race, which he started from P4, De Vries shared a podium with pole-sitter Sergio Sette Camara and Jack Aitken. De Vries had the best start, progressing from P4 to the lead before the red flag stopped the race following an opening-lap accident of Prema teammates Sean Gelael and Mick Schumacher. Meanwhile, Nikita Mazepin and Ralph Boschung also stopped on track and retired. The fifth driver to retire in the opening phase of the race was Dorian Boccolacci, who also stopped on track.
At the restart, Nyck de Vries defended the lead and stayed in front until the mandatory pit stop. He came out behind Jack Aitken but easily overtook him for the lead.
On Sunday, Anthoine Hubert started the race from pole on the reversed grid and converted it into his second F2 victory in a career. Juan Manuel Correa and Ghuanyu Zhou joined him on a podium.
The other point scorers were Jack Aitken, Sergio Sette Camara, Nicholas Latifi, Louis Deletraz and Callum Ilott. Nyck de Vries finished tenth in the Sprint race, not collecting points but staying in the championship lead ahead of next weekend’s meeting at Red Bull Ring.
