Formula 2: Jack Aitken, Nicholas Latifi victorious at Baku
Jack Aitken (Campos Racing) and Nicholas Latifi (DAMS) are the winners of two races in the second round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship season at the Baku City Circuit. Aitken triumphed in Saturday’s Feature Race, taking his second F2 victory in a career. In Sunday’s Sprint Race, Latifi scored his second win this season and the fourth in a career, confirming his lead in the championship after two rounds.
On Saturday, Jack Aitken won the race after making fantastic progress from the eighth place on the starting grid. He shared a podium with Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) and Jordan King (MP Motorsport).
The race was pretty chaotic with the first Safety Car period already on the first lap. At the start, Aitken progressed from P8 to P3, behind De Vries and polesitter Nobuharu Matsushita. Behind their back, Trident drivers Giuliano Alesi and Ralph Boschung collided.
Matsushita lost second place because of some issues with the car. Aitken took the lead after De Vries had a slow pit stop. Safety Car was out again when Mick Schumacher spun on the track. The third safety car period followed after Guanyu Zhou had slammed into the barrier. During the SC period, Tatiana Calderon stopped, Sergio Sette Camara spun on track and Louis Deletraz crashed into the Boccolacci’s car.
In Sunday’s Sprint Race, Juan Manuel Correa (Sauber Junior Team) started from pole on the reversed grid. In the end, he was on the second step of a podium, next to the winner Nicholas Latifi. Saturday’s winner Jack Aitken reached the podium again by finishing third.
The Sprint Race was also stopped immediately after the start when Louis Deletraz, Ralph Boschung and Tatiana Calderon crashed on the first corner. Two more SC periods followed later in the race, first because Giuliano Alesi stopped on track and the second time after a collision of three cars (Ghiotto, King, Mazepin).
