Formula 2: Early celebration for new champion Nyck de Vries
Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) becomes the FIA Formula 2 champion today with three more races to go until the end of the 2019 season.
The 24-year-old Dutchman triumphed today in the Feature Race at Sochi Autodrom in Russia, what is his fourth victory this season. De Vries started from pole position and converted it into a victory which secured him enough points for the early celebration ahead of one more race in Russia tomorrow and two races at season’s finale at Abu Dhabi.
Nicholas Latifi (DAMS) finished second at Sochi, confirming his second place in the championship standings. The third man on a podium today was Louis Deletraz (Carlin). It was his third podium this season.
In the Sprint Race on Sunday, Luca Ghiotto (UNI-Virtuosi Racing) scored his third win of the season, sharing a podium with Nyck de Vries ad Callum Ilott. Nicholas Latifi finished fourth and will travel to Abu Dhabi as the second-placed driver in the championship standings, with ten points more (194:184) than Luca Ghiotto.
