DTM at Misano: Wins for Wittmann, Müllerchampionship lead for Rast
Marco Wittman (BMW) and Nico Müller (Audi) are the winners of two DTM races at Misano in Italy. Rene Rast (Audi) recorded two podiums and retained the championship lead.
For Wittmann, the victory in Saturday’s race was his second this season and 13th win in DTM career. On the other side, Nico Müller scored on Sunday his second DTM victory in a career, three years after the previous triumph at Norisring in 2016.
On Saturday, Marco Wittmann showed one of the greatest runs of his career, winning the race from the very last place (18th) on the grid. Starting from the back of the grid, Wittmann decided for a tactical pit stop on the opening lap. Then, he was hoping for Safety car period and he gets it soon when Joel Eriksson parked his BMW trackside after two laps.
When others went to mandatory pit stops, Wittmann claimed the lead and defeated pole-sitter Rene Rast at the finish line. Loic Duval completed the podium. The guest driver from MotoGP Andrea Dovizioso finished 12th in Audi, ahead of the best Aston Martin driver Dani Juncadella.
On Sunday, Nico Müller clinched his second DTM victory in a career. He was followed on the finish line by Philipp Eng (BMW), whose second place in the race put him on the second place also in the championship. Eng came to Misano as the championship leader but lost a lead to Rene Rast, who finished the second race in the third place, recovering from puncture.
After three rounds and six races, Rene Rast has 93 points on his account, ten more than Philipp Eng. Nico Müller is third with 76 points, eight more than Marco Wittmann.
The fourth round will take place at Norisring on July 6-7.
