DTM: Nico Müller, Rene Rast shared a glory at Lausitzring
Audi drivers and two leaders of Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters classification Nico Müller and Rene Rast are the winners of two DTM races at Eurospeedway Lausitz, in the seventh round of the season. Rast remains the championship leader with the twenty-point gap (234:214) ahead of Nico Müller.
Audi drivers completed all podium places in both races. On Saturday, Nico Müller won the race ahead of Robin Frijns and Mike Rockenfeller. On Sunday, Rene Rast scored his fifth victory of the season, sharing a podium with Nico Müller and Mike Rockenfeller.
On Saturday, Nico Müller scored his second DTM victory this year in the #51 Audi RS5 DTM Turbo and narrowed Rene Rast’s championship lead down to just 14 points. Pole-sitter Rast had led the opening stage of the race but was forced to park his car with a mechanical issue after seven laps, allowing Müller to lead home his Abt Sportsline team-mate Robin Frijns and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi Sport Team Phoenix.
Rast’s failure to score also meant that leading BMW driver Marco Wittman, who finished fourth in the first race, also remains in title contention, alongside fellow BMW driver Philipp Eng and Audi drivers Rockenfeller and Frijns.
On Sunday, Jamie Green started the race from pole but he didn’t convert it into a victory, finishing in the fourth place. Rene Rast won the race in front of his closest championship rival Nico Muller, with third-placed Mike Rockenfeller scoring his second podium of the weekend.
It was not just 1-2-3 victory for Audi but a triumph with five cars in the top 5 because Robin Frijns finished the race in the fifth place. Marro Wittmann (BMW), who is third in the championship, finished the race in the sixth place.
