WTCR: Vernay, Bennani, Shedden winners at Wuhan
Leopard Lukoil Team WRT’s Jean-Karl Vernay and Gordon Shedden, and Sebastien Loeb Racing’s Mehdi Bennani are the winners of three races at Wuhan Street Circuit in China, in the 8th round of the 2018 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup.
In the first race of the weekend, Jean-Karl Vernay converted his pole position into the third WTCR win of the season. He shared a podium with Pepe Oriola (Campos Racing) and Gordon Shedden. On Sunday, Bennani and Shedden scored their maiden WTCR victories. Bennani has won ahead of Aurelien Comte (DG Sport Competition) and Nathanael Berthon (Comtoyou Racing). In the third race, Gordon Shedden started from pole and won the race ahead of Frederic Vervisch (Comtoyou Racing) and Denis Dupont (Comtoyou Racing).
With two victories of Audi drivers and one triumph of Volkswagen driver, Wuhan’s round is marked by disappointing results of four Hyundai drivers who came to Wuhan as the championship leaders, the first -placed BRC Racing Team’s Gabriele Tarquini and Norbert Michelisz scored no points while M Racing – YMR’s Yvan Muller and Thed Bjork collected just three points together.
However, three Hyundai stars are still leading on the top of the championship standings with two more rounds on a calendar. The championship leader Tarquini has 241 points, Bjork and Muller have 234 points each. Michelisz dropped fromP4 to P7. Pepe Oriola, Jean-Karl Vernay and Esteban Guerrieri stand on positions from p4 to P6.
The next WTCR round is scheduled for October 27-28 at Suzuka Circuit, as a part of support programme for the Japanese Super Formula Championship season’s finale.
