Mikel Azcona is 2018 European TCR champion
Mikel Azcona is the champion in the 2018 TCR Europe Series! The 22-year-old Spaniard in the #25 PCR Sport Cupra Leon TCR grabbed the title after finishing eighth in the last race of the season today at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. On Saturday, he was fifth in the first race at Spanish Grand Prix circuit.
The race winners in the seventh round of the season were Attila Tassi on Saturday and Mike Halder on Sunday. The young Hungarian in the #9 Honda Civic Type R took an authoritative lights-to-flag victory, his second this season, after starting from pole. He shared a podium with Dušan Borković and Norbert Michelisz. The championship leader Mikel Azcona finished in the fifth place, staying on the top.
Four drivers entered the last race of the season with mathematical chances to win the title – Azcona, Borković, Jean-Karl Vernay and Tassi. On Sunday, the guest driver Mike Halder started from P2 on the grid in the #909 Honda of Hell Energy Racing with KCMG and converted it into the victory. He shared a podium with Norbert Nagy and Ashley Sutton.
Two of four championship contenders (Borković and Tassi) had been eliminated in the first-lap accident. Azcona finished the race in the eighth place, one position place ahead of rival Vernay, taking the title with 22-point advantage.
