Supercars - Townsville: Victory number 111 for Jamie Whincup

  • Jamie Whincup wins at Townsville

The reigning Supercars champion Jamie Whincup scored his 111th Supercars victory in a career and the third win of the season today at Townsville street circuit, in the eighth round of the 2018 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.

The driver of the #1 Red Bull Holden has won the race ahead of his teammate Shane van Gisbergen and pole-sitter Scott McLaughlin in the #17 DJR Team Penske Ford. For Whincup, it’s his tenth victory a Townsville in the tenth running of the Supercars Championship on that circuit.

Whincup took the lead from Scott McLaughlin on Lap 2 and stayed in front until the checkered flag after 70 laps. Whincup extended the lead on more than ten seconds but late Safety Car intervention cut the gap. In the end, he crossed the finish line 2.1946 seconds ahead of Shane van Gisbergen

Van Gisbergen took the second place from McLaughlin through a slightly shorter pit stop. Craig Lowndes finished in the fourth place in the third Triple Eight’s Holden. Fabian Coulthard was fifth in the #12 DJR Team Penske Ford.

In the championship standings after Saturday’s race, Scott McLaughlin leads with a 152-point advantage over Shane van Gisbergen. David Reynolds, who finished seventh today, is third in the championship. Jamie Whincup moves from fifth to fourth, jumping Crag Lowndes.
