Formula 2: Wins for Russell, De Vrieschampionship lead for Lando Norris
George Russell (ART Grand Prix) and Nyck de Vries (Prema Theodore Racing) are the race winners at Circuit Paul Ricard in the fifth round of the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship. Russell started from pole in Saturday’s Feature Race and scored his third win of the season while De Vries has won Sunday’s Sprint Race to get his second F2 victory in a career.
In the first race, George Russell overcame tricky conditions and defeated Sergio Sette Camara (Carlin) by just one second at the finish line. MP Motorsport’s Roberto Merhi provisionally secured his second podium of the year with a third-place finish but he was disqualified after the race. His car was in breach of the Technical Regulations having failed to comply with the tyre pressure specifications. Merhi’s disqualification promoted Luca Ghiotto (Campos Racing) to the third place.
On Sunday, Nyck de Vries scored his first win of the season by defeating second-placed Louis Deletraz (Charouz Racing System) by 9.6 seconds at the end of the Sprint Race. Luca Ghiotto was third for the second time in two days.
Lando Norris (Carlin), who was 16th in the first race and fifth in the second race, continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship with 104 points, thirteen more than George Russell. Nyck de Vries is third with 75 points. The next round will take place from June 30 to July 2 at Red Bull Ring.
