George Russell is the FIA Formula 2 champion for 2018
George Russell (ART Grand Prix) is the FIA Formula 2 champion for 2018! The 20-year-old British driver secured a title with a dominant performance in the first race of the season’s finale at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, starting from pole position and scoring his seventh win of the season.
Alex Albon (DAMS) came to Abu Dhabi with mathematical chances to fight for the title but he stayed without points in Saturday’s race, finishing in 14th place, and Russell increased his advantage to 66 points ahead of Sunday’s last race of the season.
Russell shared a podium with Artem Markelov (Russian Time) and Luca Ghiotto (Campos Racing). Nyck de Vries (Prema Theodore Racing) and Lando Norris (Carlin) finished in the fourth and fifth place respectively so they still have a chance to attack Alex Albon in a battle for the runner-up spot in the championship. Albon entered Sunday’s race with 211 points, Norris had 207 and de Vries had 196 points.
The first race was marked by a chaotic start after DAMS duo Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi stalled, along with Sergio Sette Camara.
Arjun Maini was unable to get around Latifi’s car and he crashed into it, with Nirei Fukuzumi being tagged as he went around the stricken cars. The Safety Car was released after that accident and the race restartest five laps later.
On Sunday, Antonio Fuoco (Charouz Racing System) scored his second win of the season. He shared a podium with Lando Norris (Carlin) and Roberto Merhi (Campos Racing). Alex Albon finished in the eighth place, losing the runner-up spot in the championship to Lando Norris.
Carlin took the Teams’ title in their debut season in Formula 2, beating ART Grand Prix by 31 points (381:350). The third-placed team is DAMS.
