Formula 2: Victories for Albon, Russell at Baku City Circuit

  • Alexander Albon clinched his maiden F2 victory on Saturday at Baku City Circuit

Alexander Albon (DAMS) and George Russell (ART Grand Prix) are the winners of two Formula 2 races in the second round of the 2018 season at Baku City Circuit. It’s the maiden F2 victory for the Thai driver Albon in his second Formula 2 season and the first win for GP3 Series champion Russell in his rookie season in Formula 2.

Albon has won a chaotic Feature race ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Jack Aitken and Charouz Racing System’s Antonio Fuoco. Albon started from pole, losing the lead in the turn 1 to George Russell and briefly returning in front during the opening lap. The Safety car was out for the first time on Lap 1 because of Luca Ghiotto’s crash.

Later in the race, Albon lost a lead through the pit stops, dropping to P4 behind Russell, Nyck de Vries and Roy Nissany. The second Safety car intervention annulled the gaps between the drivers. After the restart, Antonio Fuoco took the lead in front of Albon. Finally, Albon reclaimed the lead on lap 25 and stayed in front until the end of the race.

In Sunday’s Sprint race, George Russell crossed the finish line as the winner after 21 laps. He shared the podium with Sergio Sette Camara (Carlin) and Nyck de Vries (Prema Theodore Racing). Russell made a decisive move against Camara on the main straight during lap 18.
