Spanish Grand Prix: Hamilton back on pole position with track record
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) takes the pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya by setting a new track record with 1.16.173. The reigning world champion is back on pole for the first time since season-opening race in Australia after his greatest rival Sebastian Vettel was fastest in three qualifying sessions. It’s the 74th pole position for Hamilton in his F1 career.
Hamilton was just four hundreds of a second faster than his teammate Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari’s pair of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will share the second row, ahead of Red Bull’s duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.
Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Fernando Alonso (McLaren), Carlos Sainz Jr. (Renault) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) completed the top 10 in qualifying for the fifth round of the 2018 F1 season.
