NASCAR: Jimmie Johnson wins at the Monster Mile
Jimmie Johnson wins the AAA 400 Drive for Autism race at Dover International Speedway, scoring his third win in the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.
For Johnson, it’s the 11th victory at the Monster Mile but also his 83rd Cup Series win in a career, tying NASCAR Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough on the all-time win list.
The seven-time Cup Series champion brought the #48 Chevrolet of Hendrick Motorsports to the Victory Lane after beating Kyle Larson. Johnson was leading just twice for seven laps. He took the checkered flag under caution as a multicar crash ended the race on its lone overtime attempt. Johnson started from the back of the field after his team made an unapproved pre-race gear change.
Kyle Larson was leading race-high 241 laps but finished in the second place. Martin Truex Jr. led three times for 102 laps and finished third, ahead of Ryan Newman and Chase Elliott. Earlier in the race, Truex won the first and second stages, running his season total of stage wins to eight, the most in the series.
