Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup: Lando Norris is the 2016 champion

  • Lando Norris, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup 2016 champion

Lando Norris is the 2016 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup champion! The 16-year-old British driver of the Josef Kaufmann Racing finished second in Sunday’s Race 2 at Spa-Francorchamps and secured enough points for the championship celebration with one more round in the calendar, in October at Estoril.

The winner of the Sunday’s race is Dorian Boccolacci (Tech 1 Racing). His teammate and the winner of Saturday’s race Hugo de Sadeleer, completed the podium with third-place finish. The Tech 1 Racing team had a perfect weekend, as Sacha Fenestraz finished fourth in Race 2, on the same position as the day before.

Max Defourny, who was Lando Norris’ biggest rival, took the pole for Sunday’s race, ahead of Jehan Daruvala, Hugo de Sadeleer and Dorian Boccolacci. Lando Norris was sixth-fastest qualifier. Max Defourny had a good start but he slowed down when his car was damaged after contact at Combes. Later he was caught up in an accident involving Robert Shwartzman, Ferdinand Habsburg and Gabriel Aubry. At the end, Defourny was classified 15th and that results promoted Lando Norris to the championship-winning position.

After 13 races, Norris has 235 points. Boccolacci jumped to the second place with 176 points, 12,5 points more than Defourny. The fourth-placed Harrison Scott is 5,5 points behind Defourny.
