FIA GT World Cup: Laurens Vanthoor wins the Qualification Race

Laurens Vanthoor (Audi Sport Team WRT) is the winner of the 12-lap Qualification Race of the 2016 FIA GT World Cup at Macau Guia Circuit. The Belgian driver brings his #8 Audi R8 LMS to the finish line with 0.786sec advantage over Porsche’s factory driver Earl Bamber in Manthey Racing’s #911 Porsche 911 GT3 R. Kevin Estre finished third in #912 Porsche.

Vanthoor’s teammate Edoardo Mortara, who started from the first starting position in the #7 Audi, finished 13th, after he spun at the first corner. Mortara rejoined the race after two pit stops, one for rear bodywork and aerodynamic wing repairs and another for tyres. On the final lap, he made strong contact with Darryl O’Young (Porsche 991), which put Hong Kong hero out of race while Mortara finished 13th. Just seven laps were run at racing speeds because Safety car were out after incidents of Nico Muller (Audi R8), Philip Ma (Porsche 991) and John Shen (Porsche 997).

Mercedes-AMG Driving Academy drivers Maro Engel and Render van der Zande completed the Top 5, ahead of best Asian driver Adderly Fong in the #10 Bentley Continental GT3.

Today’s results determine grid positions for tomorrow’s 18-lap main race.
