GP2: Giovinazzi grabs sensational win in Monza!
Prema Racing’s rookie Antonio Giovinazzi won the GP2 Series feature race at Monza after he has started from the back of the grid. This is the fourth victory for the Italian in 2016.
Another Prema Racing driver Pierre Gasly started from pole position and in the opening laps managed to resist attacks from his compatriot Charles Pic while behind them were Artem Markelov, Sergey Sirotkin, and Norman Nato.
In the middle of the race and after all drivers completed the pit-stops, safety car went out after a huge crash between Pic and Sergio Canamasas but, luckily, both drivers were unhurt. Raffaele Marciello was on the top of the grid, followed by Gustav Malja and Giovinazzi, but the gaps were very tight.
In the closing stage of the race, Giovinazzi stole the show. In the penultimate lap, he overtook Malja for second and in the final lap zipped over Marciello in Turn 1 to win the race what was a sensational achievement considering that he has started from 21st position! Marciello finished 2nd while Malja completed a podium, leaving the championship leader Gasly at 4th and Nato at 5th place.
